Shit!  I just read that Derek Roddy thread and it's totally depressing to read all the criticism aimed at Leon's drumming. It's pissed me off so much I don't think I can get my head together right now to post a decent reply to all that shit. It seems that there's a lot of jealousy amongst drummers and I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm a Mithras fan. Like Leon says, you can't win. If it sounds perfect you get accused of cheating and/or using a drum machine/programming. If you make a few small mistakes or you sound in the least bit human they accuse you of being a sloppy player. I don't profess to be any kind of expert on drumming but I think Leon's stuff sounds amazing - even more so when you take into account how long he's been playing the drums.
I personally wouldn't change the sound of the drums. I think some people have a problem with the sound of the toms but I think they sound great - so it's down to personal taste again. To be honest after reading comments on WBTV, it seems to bring about very bi-polar reactions. It's an album you either love or hate (much like many great masterpieces). The same thing applies to the production and sound.
At the end of the day though, these critics on the drum forum - they can talk the talk...but can they walk the walk?? Leon's put out his heart and soul in the form of music for people to judge and appreciate...but would they be willing or able to do the same thing, I think not. They talk drums but most of it is bullshit that's flying around - I see/hear none of their results.
As for the comment from the Irish dude about Nile's 'In Their Darkened Shrines' being way ahead of WBTV I have words for him, 'get your ears syringed dickhead'. I think Nile are a great band, really tight etc. but is their stuff ground-breaking? Is it fuck! Iron Maiden did the egyptian thing in 1984 then moved on. Nile keep releasing the same album albeit a tighter version each time. ITDS is good but not that good. I've probably listened to WBTV a thousand times more and know all it's intricacies and it's much more experimental and breaks a lot of new ground. Nuff said on Nile.
My final word is for Leon and Mithras as a whole. Always view vehement criticism and controversy as something positive. All this interest in what you're doing can only be a good thing - there's no such thing as bad publicity! The scary thing for these dudes on the drum forum is the fact that Leon has had a lot more practice on the drums since the recording of WBTV and it will show on the next album - the 'goalposts' will move again (I'm such a shit-stirrer heh heh). Mithras as a band (including the live team) will have improved again.
