Get a job, then you can afford all the gear you like. I honestly don't have much money at all though, I can't even afford to buy new pants right now, and I badly need new pants. So I saw that baby on ebay, and said WHO NEEDS PANTS?!?!

Sorry if I sounded arse-y, bit of a gay post. I was having an off day.

On the subject of guitars. I think its about time I got a new one. My old ones getting old and I don't think there's much life in the old girl. Any recommendations? This will be my 3rd guitar after 8 years of playing (badly). I'm no Hendrix, so I don't want to spend a silly amount, but I'm experienced enough to know a bad guitar when I play one.

Well, £350 is the figure I had in my head. I'm more of a rhythm player than a lead player (more of a tapper than a wailer). I like to play like Samoth, i.e. with the high-ish barre chords and the low death metal lines. I don't want to have one or the other (I find that I have to sacrifice the low volume to get the highs to sound good and vice versa).

I find that some guitars are a chore to pick fast if I'm playing death metal. Could bridge height effect this? Basically, anything that eases rather than hinders speed would be cool. Play in a dropped B usually (unsure on the best pickups).

Aesthetically, I hate spikey guitars and the lighter the better.

Any recommendations, I'll go to a shop and try them out.

Go for a nice Ibanez so, Leeless. I'd say you could get a decent one for that price.

I went on the Ibanez website and I found the S Series, SA Series and the SZ Series. Was it a typo or is there an SO?

no, but string tension can, which is determined by the combination of string gauge and the tuning you are using, and also the scale length of the guitar. also, you may find that some picks are better for playing fast (thicker ones are the norm. so when you go into a guitar shop and try out a guitar, bear in mind that you will eventually be using your own preferred string gauge and tuning. you are stuck with the scale length though

a lower tuning means less tension
heavier strings mean higher tension (hence why you use heavier strings to compensate for a low tuning)
a longer scale length means higher tension

Cheers Lee (good name by the way).

So to make it easier to fast pick, would I need little tension on the string (more flexible) or much tension (less slack)?

i think its personal preference, and depends on your picking technique too. also, it can be different on the higher strings than the lower strings. and another factor would be how close to the bridge you pick. but heavy picks are generally accepted to be best for fast picking.

what im trying to say is, if you play a guitar in the shop and it seems like you cant do fast picking, its probably just the way its tuned/setup/strung.

Indeed, listen to Lee there, he knows what he's talking about. On the other hand, if you've got problems with picking at speed, it very well could be your technique. I might be able to help if you describe it to me in detail, right down to the way you hold your pick. Do you rest your fingers on the body while picking?

Just to tie up this loose end. I ended up getting a Jackson RR3 (what did I say about spikey guitars? ). I knew it was for me when I first played it. It was heaven +Boooya!
