Best Guitarists? Here are ones I like for different reasons:-

Hendrix - (obvious) All round genius, great tone.

Tony Iommi - The Riffmeister General

Dave Mustaine - Awesome Rhythm

Trey Azagthoth - Rhythm and soloing. Great live player.

Eddie Van Halen - Tap Tap Tap...Hugely influential

Jeff Beck - shame on you for not mentioning this bloke. Has great control. Another great live player.

That's all for now - I may add a few more

P.S. Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, and Malmsteen are gay

i prefer satrianis more laid back stuff personally (day at the beach, tears in the rain) and i like malmsteen (i have magnum opus) and he is without a doubt one of the fastest players alive! but his solos aren't memorable in the slightesst cuz they're just ridiculously fast arppegios with little or no dynamics etc.

apparently he's a right pompous bitch, theres a recording of him on the net somewhere, it was on a flight, a stewardess spilt a bit of water on him, nothing that'd stain, just a liiiittle bit of water and he lost his mind, i havnt heard it my self but my teacher told me about it

Shame on me for not mentioning Alex Skolnick - Lead guitars, of early Testament fame. Really melodic soloing on top of fast classic thrash.

impossible to answer. all the guitarists mentioned so far are all "kerrang" and people would recite them as the best without even listening to them.
I've heard Hendrix and 80% of his stuff sucks.

i'd put up any highly trained flamenco guitarist with the so called rock greats.

I mean, sure lightning fast solos are impressive or the knowledge of a hundred different scales is no mean feat but surely best guitar players is a highly personal affair? If they trigger something inside you then that's best for me. Dave Murray has always been one of my favourite players ever and his skill or musical knowledge is no where near on par the above mentioned yet i'd rather listen to him any day.

I agree with you on this - about triggering something inside. Although the likes of Steve Vai and Satriani are impressive players, most of their stuff does nothing for me. Most of their stuff to me sounds too 'practiced' and exact; almost too perfect and it does get boring to listen to.

Iron Maiden are a great band - they seem to have outlasted almost everyone. I saw them live last December and it was the best Maiden gig I've attended. I think Dave Murray's legato technique is really cool. Like Vai would play a lot of single notes and every note would be separate whereas Dave Murray would play them as one fluid melody in his fast solos.
