I can't pick a favourite. I had literally hundreds of 'em on VHS and used to collect video nasties.

As for which type is more effective, it depends on the psychology of the individual. I've watched shitloads of excessively violent/very gory films and I think you become accustomed/conditioned to gore after a while. It doesn't really have a lasting effect on the mind. This type of horror film either packs short, sharp shocks or creates feelings of disgust/revulsion in viewers.

The horror films that are suggestive with their content and rely on the viewer's mind to conjure images have a more lasting effect. I always think that your own mind creates fear that relates to you personally and is therefore far more frightening than any amount of special-effects/gore.

Obviously the best horror films can combine both approaches to scare the shit outta ya :twisted:

eg. The Thing (1982, John Carpenter) - It has the gore and shocks every time 'The Thing' reveals itself, but then Carpenter has you guessing all the way through as to which person 'The Thing' occupies. The ending is a classic too. It's very important to have a good ending so your audience/victims are still shitting themselves or thinking about the film hours after. :twisted:

Best bit on the thing- When the guy is ressusitating (How do you spell that word?!) that fat guy, and his chest opens up and bites his arms off.
I've seen it loads of times, I always know it's coming, I know it looks rubbish, but it gets me every time.
