I think that's why I rate Lombardo so highly - not for speed or double bass but for keeping everything interesting and not mechanical like you say. It's like the fast beats are always under control and in synch but sound as if they're 'tripping over each other' - that's what grabs my attention with the drums and what separates the 'merely' fast drummers from the great ones.
