I think that the best death metal frontmen are not only good vocalists, but also intimidating and imposing onstage. Rayner's got 'the' presence, I think; when I've seen Mithras live I felt like he was waging war on the crowd.
With all due respect to Jeff Walker, seeing a tiny chap bouncing about the stage sort of ruins the effect.
David Vincent in his prime (i.e. before the green hair and vinyl mini-skirt) was truly imposing--a real death metal warrior, a natural leader.
