It's set on an impossibly long beach while the incredibly sick and weak protagonist drags his tired dying form along it looking for a couple of doors that lead to various parts of America during the 1950s and 1980s so that he can get a gang together to go find the Tower, and at night he has to hide from giant lobster-like creatures.

I haven't but bizarrely someone bought me pt7 of that series of books

Considering that the last 5 books in the series are roughly eight trillion pages long, and that the final one's the second largest of the lot, why would someone get you the last one?
