"...virtually all of the guitar solos lack direction (and more importantly, purpose)" - Weeman I can't work out whether a directionless solo is purposeless or not. Look at the front cover of the album and tell me which direction is which. If anyone interprets Leons quiter, ambient guitar parts as "space", "calm" or emptiness, then you can just as easily interpret some of Leon's more wilder solo's as a reflection of the madness behind the shadows, both in terms of the characters plight and the fucked up nature of the world he is inhabiting. That gives them much purpose. "Hehe, yeah weirdly some people think Rayner has a very monotonous delivery throughout, but I've always heard it as being very varied without being annoyingly so." - Leon It's extreme metal, not Bohemian Rhapsody. The majority of extreme vocals ARE monotonous. Rayner's vocals always seem to have a powerful and dramatic deliverance to them which, when combined with the actual meaning of the words, makes every phrase have a different feel. |

Aside from the typo I didn't catch on Rayner's last name, I stand by every word in the review, though I'll concede the possibility that my analysis of the drumming may not be entirely accurate; I'm no drummer, I'm simply going by what I've heard when listening exclusively to the drums, and that is a lack of rhythmic unity between the drum parts and the guitar parts, especially compared to the first two albums. Anyway, the reason I didn't post the review here is because I didn't want it to look like I wrote it for the purpose of trolling the forums; I mean, if you come on somebody's forum just to trash them, it tends to make you look like a jerk. And sorry to disappoint, but I've defintely heard the record enough times to solidify my opinion of it. I let it digest for about two months before I finally wrote the review, actually. For the record, I'd probably give "Worlds..." a 90, and "...Legions" a 70. All three albums are fairly distinct, so it's no surprise that opinions vary on them. |
